Dear Family and Friends,
Today, we took advantage of great weather and a trail book that one of Joe's friends lent him to do a little fall hiking in Provence. Our point of departure was the village of Seyne at the base of the French Alps about an hour and a half from our house.

| Citadel |
Like so many small villages in Southern France, Seyne has its own unique ambiance. Within a couple blocks, we found a couple large churches, a monument, and a large fortress on the hill.
 |
| On the Trail |
We started our hike about 10 kilometers above the town. Of course, no hike would be complete without a stick with which to poke things you find along the way (including siblings).
 |
| Ascending the Summit |
Although the trail was listed as "easy," the climb to the top was fairly rigorous and rocky. With the exception of Nicolas who just got braces yesterday (we'll give him this one), we were surprised that no one complained at all during the hike.
 |
| Alpine Basin |
At the top, we hiked through several medows. Unfortunately, all of the summer flowers were gone, as were most of the small alpine lakes that one can usually find in these mountains.
 |
| Les Alpes |
Throughout our hike, we had some great views of the surrounding alps and valleys. After we got back to the car, Nicolas immediately asked if we could do this hike again. Even Nathaniel recovered surprisingly quickly from the sadness of having to depart with his beloved walking stick.
 |
| Road from Heck |
Between Seyne and Gap, we had to traverse a tiny one-lane road with barely enough room for our car. Unlike most narrow roads in France, there were very few turnouts to let oncoming traffic pass. This was not a road for people who have issues with heights and sudden drop-offs.

| Checking Directions |
After all of the time Joe has spent at work lately, we were very glad to have some time to spend as a family and get some exercise in the mountains close to home. It definately makes us grateful for all of the beauty around us here.
Bonne Semaine,
Joe, Julie, Nicolas, Elyse, and Nathaniel
