Christmas in Aix

Dear Family and Friends,

The Christmas Season has arrived and we are getting set to spend out second Christmas in Europe. Julie started to decorate our house and the kids have begun taking turns updating the advent calendar.

This Saturday, we took a drive down to Aix en Provence to visit the "Foire aux Santons" or a fair of nativities from Provence.

These Nativities are unique to our area and depict a mixture of religious and traditional villiage life. In addition to baby Jesus, Mary, Joseph, and the wise men, there are hand-painted figurines of bread-makers, mushroom gatherers, shepherds, builders, and various other craftsman. All of the different buildings, foilage, and figures make collecting santons a holiday tradition for many in our area.

After a visit to the fair, we stopped for a quick bite at the Bistro Romaine before walking down the main street to see the Christmas kiosks. Though different than a stroll around Temple Square, it was interesting to see all of the activity in downtown Aix on a Saturday night.

Joyeaux Noel!

Joe, Julie, Nicolas, Elyse, and Nathaniel
