Salzburg Part 2

Dear Family and Friends,

Over the last couple of days, we have been able to see and do many things here in Salzburg. Here are a few of the recent highlights:

While here, we have been able to see many of the sites used in the Sound of Music. Most of these we have simply recognized as we have wandered through town, such as bridges, gardens, churches, and buildings. However, we did take a very short drive to see the mansion used in the film. Though we weren't able to get too close, we did recognize the back side of the house that appeared in several scenes, such as the children falling into the lake, the balcony scene and others (look closely at the picture to see the back gate with its statues of horses).

The kids enjoyed our tour of the Mirabelle Gardens. However, even though the steps just below Elyse were part of "Doe Ray Me", the thing the kids will remember most about the Gardens was its playground with a large slide, swings, and merry-go-round. For our part, we were glad to give them a break from all of the cultural activities and let them run around for a while.

No tour of Salzburg would be complete without a trip to the Mozart home. In addition to seeing where the Mozart family lived, there were numerous worthwhile exhibits, such as letters written by Mozart to his wife, an upside-down room, his musical instruments, and even lockes of his hair.

One of our favorite family activities has been going to see Die Zauberflote (The Magic Flute) performed at the Salzburg Marionette Theater. While the kids were initially reluctant to go a two-hour opera, tne marionettes, scenery, music, and action kept their attention throughout the production. Nicolas and Nathaniel liked Papageno's antics, Elyse preferred the various animals, Julie liked all the puppets, and Joe was impressed by the Queen of the Night sceens (pictured).

Last of all, the kids have loved spending time at the hotel. After all, it's where all of their new Christmas toys are located!

Joe, Julie, Nicolas, Elyse, and Nathaniel
